Conclusion |
| None of the steel knives stood up to the sea water test. Titanium was not affected at all by the sea water. We have a titanium knife that has been in sea water for over 4 years and it is not affected either.
Steel - neither tool steel or stainless stands up to sea water. The stainless had less rust, but pitted due to impurities in the steel during the raw materials manufacturing phase. The tool steel, at first, seemed to protect itself with a protective layer of rust, but after awhile, whole layers of steel peeled off of this material. It is unknown at this time if a coating such as titanium aluminum carbo nitride will make a difference in the corrosion resistance of the steel. Titanium should always be used in extreme environments! |
