Mission Knives & Tools, Inc: Saltwater Corrosion Test
5-30-98 Report

Continuously soaked in sea water. For both photos of all four knives, I let them air dry first. Severe rust so bad that whole layers can be seen flaking off.

See PHOTO1,

See PHOTO2

  1. Mission Knives MPK - No signs of corrosion. No smell on the knife whatsoever.
  2. Ontario Navy MK3 MOD0 - Rust appears to be deeper and there appears to be more and deeper pitting. In fact, the pitting has "eaten" its way almost completely through the blade (both sides)! So much pitting, in fact, that the tip "rotted" away. This knife has a "rotting" stink to it.
  3. Ontario USMC Combat Knife - Leather has swelled. HEAVY, HEAVY coat of rust over the entire knife, including pommel, and, what appears to be layers of the metal flaking off. On the back side is some kind of Black oxidation or fungus. Pitting has set in. Guard continues to rust, as does pommel. This knife has a "rotting" stink to it.
  4. Ontario Air Force Survival - Leather has swelled. HEAVY, HEAVY coat of rust over the entire knife, including pommel, and, what appears to be layers of the metal flaking off. On the back side is some kind of Black oxidation or fungus. Pitting has set in. Guard continues to rust, as does pommel. This knife has a "rotting" stench to it.
